On the Table– April 1 through 7

For the record: If you ever have the chance to discuss a Bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-winning, National Book Award novel, if at all possible try to do so with two high school Honors Lit teachers… the kind of people who undertake a Master’s degree in order to ‘find time to write,’ and who take the LSAT for fun. Dude. Seriously, it was an epic day for the Common Table Book Club! My head and my heart are still swollen. I’m sincerely sorry if you missed it! We are excited to be back in our regular groove on Sundays, meeting again in... Read more

On the Table– March 25 through 31

Wow, that was fun! Many thanks to everyone who came out last night for our first Spirits and Spirituality— it was a great conversation, full of enlightening insights and fresh perspectives. Special appreciation to Ali and Doug and Croghan for organizing and publicizing and finding such a perfect venue (as the weather warms I hope Chester will join us in the outdoor beer garden!). Stay tuned for the next date of this great meetup. Another fun time was had this past Sunday, when we brought yummy food to the appreciative residents at Bethany Center in the city. After serving and... Read more

On the Table– March 18 through 24

It happened again last week. I was sharing a beverage with several nationally noted church leaders, and one of them prodded me yet again to talk about the concept of ‘service worship.’ I’m always unembarrassed to passionately extoll this Common Table virtue, because it wasn’t my idea! Rather than meet week after week after week, we’ve intentionally scheduled an imbalance into our life together– a chance to ‘call our own bluff’ and take our homegrown, high-minded spiritual activism to the streets and actually help people! Our project of late has been a perfect fit with our new hosts at Good... Read more

LECTIONARY READING: Luke 13:31-35 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” He said to them, “Go and tell that fox for me, ‘Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How... Read more

On the Table– March 11 through 17

Wow, that was a lot of cookies! Emmaline’s request was for between 20 and 30 DOZEN cookies to bring to her prison ministry, and that’s what she got! Big ups to Ali for so expertly leading the kitchen brigade, and to Good Shepherd for letting us use their amazing kitchen, where we were able to bake 8 dozen cookies simultaneously. Meanwhile down the hall, artists applied themselves to personalizing placemats, signs, and cards of affirmation. It was an honor to support this incredible initiative (and yes, we all engaged in a bit of informal Cookie Quality Assurance). This week, we’re... Read more
