On the Table – March 12th through 18th

Hi church, Well, it’s spring now, apparently.  Welcome to it!  Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter (on the other hand) are still a way off, so we get to continue our Lenten journey together for another few weeks.  One excellent way to do that would be to join us Friday evening for our Lenten series of gatherings in Falls Church to discuss practices for spiritual formation – if you want to join in, contact us! Then, on Sunday morning (10am at Jammin’ Java), we’ll try venturing somewhere where most churches – including us, a lot of the time – can fear to tread.  I’m talking about... Read more

On the Table – March 5th through 11th

Hi church, This week, we’re continuing our Lenten series of Friday-evening gatherings in Falls Church to discuss practices for spiritual formation – if you want to join, contact us and we’ll give you the skinny! Also, we’ll be gathering at 10am on Sunday at Jammin’ Java for…a sequel!  Fear not – I’m pretty sure this one is going to be more like The Empire Strikes Back and less like Ghostbusters II.  But putting ’80’s sci-fi cinema aside (just for a moment), I also want to make sure I remind you that this is the weekend we “spring forward” for Daylight Saving Time, so 10am comes extra early this week –... On the Table – February 27th through March 4th

Howdy, kids! We hope that the first full week of Lent has been a good week for one and all. If you’re having a little trouble getting Lent started, Rachel Held Evans has 40 Ideas for Lent, and interestingly enough, so does Nadia Bolz-Weber. We’ll be having Week 2 of our Lenten discussion series on spiritual formation and how we can become more like Jesus tonight at 7:30 (contact us for more details). The last time we gathered at Jammin Java, we explored our anger and the implications of our anger. Many of us came to the conclusion that anger is a gift from... Read more

On the Table – February 20th through 26th

Hi church, As I write this, it’s just a few minutes after midnight, and Ash Wednesday is now past. I still haven’t washed the ashes off my forehead, but I’ve smudged them pretty well over the course of the day. (I should probably go to bed.) We’re starting our Lent kind of slowly, since this Sunday is a fourth Sunday and we’re not going to be gathering at Jammin’ Java. However, a bunch of us are planning to go to the Taizé Contemplative Worship with Healing Rite at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna at 5pm on Sunday. We’d love... Read more

On The Table – February 13 through 19

Dear Church, There is so much to be angry about these days:  politics (of both kinds), the fact that there are only two kinds of politics, traffic, the economy, report cards (giving and receiving), civil wars (and the fuel prices that get blamed on them), joblessness, sleeplessness, poor health, and mattress advertisements featuring dancing ex-Presidents. Even after Common Table’s recent foray into ‘turning the other cheek’, it seems that anger is in the air.  So our Creative Team was inspired to explore this issue of anger– how it works, how it harms us, how it benefits us, and how we can use...
